History of the Hughes Family
Thomas Hughes' home
was an "underground railroad station" for slaves fleeing to the North.
The Hughes
House was built in 1814 of hand cut stone, quarried by the slaves of Thomas
Hughes. An oval stone in the gable facing south bears the date 1814 and the
initials T.H. and E.H. for Hughes and his wife Elizabeth. Hughes
freed all his slaves prior to the Civil War as he was opposed to slavery. His
home became a station on the underground railroad. Slaves were hidden in a coal
mine behind the house in warm weather and in the cellar during the winter. An
underground tunnel connected the cellar with the mine. The
Hughes House is located in Jefferson, PA. See

JAMES M. WHITE (JOHN4, JACOB3, JAMES2, WILLIAM1) was born January 29, 1832 in Washington County, PA, and died December 08, 1865 in Washington County, PA. He married ELIZABETH ANN HUGHES February 21, 1856. Children of JAMES WHITE and ELIZABETH HUGHES are: JOHN P.6 WHITE. . MARTHA B. WHITE. JAMES G. WHITE. SMILEY EDWARD WHITE. v. ALBERT R. WHITE. James M. White and his wife Elizabeth HUGHES White lived on a farm in Cross Creek Twp., not far from the Hughes home farm in Mt. Pleasant Twp. Following his death, Elizabeth moved back to her parents home, where she remained until her death on December 12, 1898. At that time, her son, John Parker White was running the farm. Both James M. White and his wife Elizabeth Hughes White are buried in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory, PA.
