Vermillion Institute, Hayesville, Ashland County Ohio

Photo and information from Historic Ashland County Book, by Betty Plank 1987.

The Vermillion Institute is still standing in Haysville. It was erected in Hayesville for advanced Education training for the children. It was called the Vermillion Institute or the Hayesville Academy and at one time had an enrollment of 600 students from 13 states.

The cornerstone was laid July 4, 1845. According to A. J. Baughman in his 1900 history, the school was first organized by the Baptists and within five years passed to the control of the Wooster Presbytery. Enrollment fell during the Civil War and never regained it s former prestige. By the late 1880's Wooster College had been established and the classes at the Institute were over. In 1886 it opened as Hayesville High School and remained so until 1929.

The Historic Ashland County Book written by Betty Plank in 1987 has more information on the institute as to some of the old students and a few of the old teachers.

Many notables attended this school. It is located in the North East area of Ohio. I seen it referred to as a "Presbyterial Academy" and as a "Presbyterian College."

I found this reference: "1830 census for Vermillion Township, Richland County, now Ashland County OH" which might help locate more information.
