Local and Parish Histories of Ireland

Parish and Local Histories have been written about many of the places where our Irish ancestors lived. These books, when available, can include nearly every available scrap of information on the local area from the geology through modern day organizations, and including many historical documents. They can be a gold mine of information about places where our Irish ancestors lived and some even include lists of names. Some of these books, published in the 1990s, have been compiled by committees of local historical societies, under the guidance of professional historians, using the assistance of FAS Trainees, and with the financial support of the government. However, it can be very difficult to locate these books, except at the local news agent, bookshop or county library, or perhaps through a local member of the committee which compiled them. They are rarely found in indexes at the major libraries, even in the National Library in Dublin.

This list is an attempt to locate and list these very valuable books, on the theory that, if you know it exists, you have a much better chance of finding it. We encourage your assistance in checking your personal library, the local Family History Center or public library for books that would fall into the category of local or parish history in Ireland.

WHERE DO I FIND THESE BOOKS?

This can be a problem. If it were easy, we wouldn't have had to dig so hard to find the books to put on this list. Here are some search techniques:

·        Some of the links included here will take you to a site where they may be purchased.

·        Some of these books might be located by checking: "On-Line Book Catalogs from "Some History & Genealogy Book Vendors".

·        Amazon.com, the online bookstore, will attempt to locate Out-of-Print books for you. You will be notified you when they are found and can choose whether to accept the book. This has been a successful technique for many people. Record your request at Amazon's Out-Of-Print Books page.

·        Use the on-line catalogue of your public library to search its collection, and then go on to the catalogues of the other libraries which are available through its Internet connection.
For Example: my modem is set through Win98/Accessories/Hyperterminal to dial up my local  (King County, WA) public library. From its on-line catalogue I can link on to the Seattle Public Library which has a very large genealogy collection, the University of Washington which has a large history and periodical collection, and many other public and University libraries. Investigate your local resources for doing the same. If this is not possible, use your own browser and Gopher to reach the far-away libraries.  Search the Library of Congress at http://catalog.loc.gov/

·        Use the CD or microfiche version of the Family History Library Catalog (LDS) at a local Family History Center branch to search for the titles you found listed here or go online at http://www.familysearch.org. (Unfortunately it is not possible to do a general search for "parish histories, or I would have done so.) If the book has been made available on microfilm or microfiche, you can order it through your local branch Family History Center.

·        (We haven't yet had time to search for all these titles in the FHLC. If you locate any of them there, please let us know the film number.)

·        In Ireland, with a title in hand, you can explore the local area (subject of the book) and ask members of the local historical society, the librarian, clerks in bookstores and newsagents', where the book might be purchased, if it is a recent publication. If it is old, try the county or local library.

GENERAL NOTES ON ORDNANCE SURVEY MEMOIRS

There are references to the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Northern Ireland Counties under some of the county headings. Here are some excerpts from the websites noted below:

"The Memoirs are a uniquely detailed source for the history of much of Ireland for the time frame immediately preceding the Great Famine of the 1840s. They were written primarily in the 1830s and intended to be printed to accompany the "6 inch to one mile" map series: but they failed to reach the presses until just recently! Now the manuscripts are being published in a series as a joint undertaking of the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, and the Institute of Irish Studies, Queen's University of Belfast. The Memoirs document the landscape and situation, buildings and antiquities, landholdings and population, employment and livelihood of the civil parishes which are covered in each, some volumes even containing names and details of emigrants during the period written about. As such they are valuable sources of information for the family genealogist and local historian to use in "fleshing out" those cold statistics and impersonal data research generates by putting "people on the land back in time". .The series volumes are numbered consecutively, beginning with Vol. 1.However, several counties have required more than a single volume to complete the publication of all available manuscript material. These "intra-county" volumes, while numbered sequentially for the county, do not have a sequential series volume number.

"DONEGAL, CAVAN, MONAGHAN, and the rest of Eire - Vols. 38-40. The forthcoming publication of three volumes covering County Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan, the border counties Louth and Meath, as well as fragments of material from more southerly counties including Leitrim, Longford and Cork, and the rest of Eire will bring to a conclusion the complete series of the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland. (Please note that only 'fragments' of Republic of Ireland Counties Memoirs are planned for publication.)"

A full table of contents, descriptions and prices for the 40 volumes of the ORDNANCE SURVEY MEMOIRS OF IRELAND Edited by Angelique Day and Patrick McWilliams, The Institute of Irish Studies, Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, along with listings of the parishes contained in each may be seen at the web site of the Institute of Irish Studies (UK).

1740

In 1740 a list of Protestant householders was compiled in parts of Counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Donegal, Londonderry and Tyrone. It is arranged by county, barony and parish and gives the name only. A typescript copy of the 1740 return of Protestant householders is available on the Search Room shelves.

1766

In March and April 1766, Church of Ireland Rectors were instructed by the government to compile complete returns of all householders in their resepctive parishes, showing their religion, as between Church of Ireland (Episcopalian), Roman Catholic (termed `Papists` in the returns) and Presbyterians (or Dissenters), and giving an account of any Roman Catholic clergy active in their area. Some of the more diligent rectors listed every townland and every household, but many drew up only numerical totals of the population. All of the original returns were destroyed in the Four Courts in 1922, but extensive transcripts survive and are available on the Search Room shelves. Copies are also available PRONI Ref. T.808/15264-15267

1824 - 1838

The Composition Act of 1823 specified the tithes due to the Established Church, which had been payable in kind, should now be paid in money. As a result it was necessary to carry out a valuation of the entire county, parish by parish, in order to determine how much would be payable by each landowner. The Tithe Applotment Books list the occupier of titheable land and are not a list of householders as is the case in a census. Therefore, labourers, weavers etc were all omitted, in addition to all purely urban dwellers. The Householders Index, available on the shelves of the Public Search Room, can be used as a guide to the surnames listed in the Tithe Applotment Books. PRONI Ref. FIN 5A

1831 -
