Daughters (and Sons) of the American Revolution Applications (DAR and SAR) often have valuable information. Perhaps we could list all the descendents who joined and have a researcher copy the files?

Seven children: five sons- James, Robert, Abram, Henry and Joseph. Sons Robert, Henry, and James (Old Salem, Derry Twp) served in PA militia and as Rangers on Frontiers. All sons married except Henry (who I think died in the Revolutionary War?). I don't know if Abram or Joseph served in another unit or if they didn't serve. I need to re-check the Fulton book as it is probably mentioned. I would assume there are probably members under son James?

DAR/SAR members under Robert FULTON
1) Mrs. Martha W. FULTON  DAR ID Number: 35044, her son Walter Sheppard FULTON belonged to SAR -
2) Mrs. Anne Fulton Iiolloway DAR ID Number: 65868
3) Steven Weyand FOLKERS SWF12262@aol.com wrote: My grandmother did research on the family for her DAR application in 1948
4) Ernest CRAIGHEAD, who published FULTONs of Westmoreland County in 1940 belonged to SAR under son Robert.

(Justice) WILLIAM Henry Fulton WHITE, Seattle, Wash. (12448). Son of Thompson and Sarah (Fulton) White; grandson of Henry and Jane (Hartley) Fulton; great-grandson of Robert Fulton, private Westmoreland County Penna. Militia.

Mary Droege wrote <snip> .  I have a copy of my great Aunt, Jane FULTON's, application for DAR, and a copy of Frank's mother's application.
Leilia Fulton Folkers was National Number 383623, accepted April 16, 1949.
Jane Turner Fulton was accepted April 15, 1950, and her National Number was 392670

I would guess that (my other great Aunt) Martha Fulton's might be the next number.

Jane Fulton's lineage traced her descent from Robert Fulton (1752-1820) as follows:
the daughter of Abram Charles Fulton born on 6-26-1831 at Westmoreland Co. Pa died at Atlantic Iowa on 5-12-1905 and his wife Theoda Smart born on 9-23-1835 at Northeastern N.Y. died at Atlantic Iowa on 6-10-1904

Abraham FULTON church letter (digital copy)  presented to Abraham and Margaret FULTON by the First Dunboe Presbyterian Church at Dunboe, Articlave, Northern Ireland.  The First Dunboe Church is one of the places Robert (Fulton) Hirth and group visited in the Fulton 1995 reunion in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The photograph of the church is on the web page at: http://www.frontiernet.net/~elisa96/hirth/wwpg7.htm Rev. George FULTON of Pittsburgh PA, who is in this photograph in the top row on the right, is a descendant of the Abraham Fulton and Margaret Guthrie.

*** it's possible the "Robert Guthry, Elder" signer above is related to Margaret Guthrie/Guthry FULTON, wife of Abraham FULTON, but I am unaware of proof.****

This area in Northern Ireland is significant to all who research FULTONS because not only were there many Fultons in the area, but also there were several organized groups in 1700s who came to the American colonies from that region. Even if your immigrant ancestor came directly from Scotland, there is a good chance that some of his collateral lines lived in Northern Irleand.

Children of Abraham Fulton  b: Abt. 1712 in Articlave, Londonderry County, Ireland - died 1787, Westmoreland Co., PA + Margaret GUTHRIE or GUTHREY   born 1716  m: Abt. 1745 Emigrated to US in 1772. (some dates per Steve Folkers email)

ABRAHAM1 FULTON was born Abt. 1712 in Articlave (North Dunboe), Londonderry, N. Ireland, and died October 02, 1800 in Cumberland County, PA. He married MARGARET GUTHRIE Abt. 1745 in Articlave (North Dunboe), Londonderry, N. Ireland.  (note: I need to look through my notes on which of the different details of Abraham FULTON's death is correct.)

Notes for ABRAHAM FULTON:
DESCRIPTION: (FFL 89:72)
From "The New York Journal", Oct 29, 1772 Virginia Oct 19, 1772 " On Friday last, the 16th inst., arrived at Hampton Road the ship General Wolfe, Captain Hunter, with passengers from Londonderry. 80 of them were the same afternoon landed at Hampton mere skeletons, so weak that they could hardly walk or stand, and most of them without any money for their support. The inhabitants charitably took care of them and supplied them with necessities, intending , however, to oblige the captain who was ill of the gout on board to give security for their support according to law. This ship it is said had been seventeen weeks on the passage, near half the time at short allowance, came out with 300 of whom about 80 had died at sea of mere want and the disorders arising from it, in drinking salt water, etc. Part of the time the allowance was half a biscuit and half a pint of water a day. He met at sea the sloop Patty (late Captain Basden) who had been run foul of and quitted by all the people except two little negro boys, as mention in our last. Captain Hunter put some of his hands on board after securing the most valuable effects, sent her to Philadelphia. About 50 passengers left the ship near the Capes and went off to Baltimore in Maryland. (Note: Among the 50 according to tradition was Abraham Fulton, his family, and the famous Church letter (see April 1989 Letter). (The General Wolfe sailed from Londonderry on June 25, 1772, less than a month after the date of the Church letter. The length of the passage, the deaths, the short allowance, etc., all seem to coincide with the traditions given us, most importantly in a letter from James Fulton of Latrobe which stated that they landed in Baltimore.)" (FFL 89:73)

(FFL 89:73) "JOURNEY ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS The journey across the mountains must have been most arduous and perilous. The only means of locomotion was on foot or by horseback. The only road was that created by the soldiers of General Forbe's or General Braddock's armies a few years before, a mere mountain&127; trail and now roughly the course of the Lincoln Highway (U.S. 30) and the National Highway (U.S.40).

FULTON FAMILY ON WESTERN SIDE OF MOUNTAINS The Treaty of Peace, closing the French and Indian conflict, had scarcely been signed, assurance given that the Western woods were really British lands, then a tide of men swept down from the East to occupy the broad, beautiful acres open to settlement. .

The Fulton Family located in the Sewickley Settlement near the Big Sewickley Creek in what is now called South Huntington Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. In this region they lived the lives of frontier pioneers, farmed, raised numerous offspring, served their newly adopted country in the Revolutionary War, went to church in crude log structures, died, and are buried in the old country graveyards which endure to this day."

History of Westmoreland County, Volume 1, Chapter 13
The Removal of County Seat to Greensburg
http://www.pa-roots.com/westmoreland/historyproject/vol1/chap13.html

The reader will discover that in the justices’ letter or certificate given above, and dated August 10, 1786, they say that they have adjourned the courts to the new court house in Newtown. They had probably done this, but even then troubles were brewing, engendered largely by Hanna and his friends, who were loathe to see the courthouse leave Hannastown. So, to in some degree appease the wrath of these adherents of Hanna. it was determined to hold the October term of court in Hannastown, and this was accordingly done. The first court held in Greensburg was the January term Of 1787, beginning on January 7th, with judge John Moore on the bench. The following is a list of the jurors who served at this first court in the new county seat: Grand jurors--David Duncan, James Carnahan. John Carnahan, John SLOAN, Abraham FULTON, Charles Baird, William Best, Nathaniel McBrier, Joseph Mann, James FULTON, William Mann, Charles Johnston, Jacob Huffman, Samuel Sinclair, and John Craig. Traverse Jurors: Alexander Craig, John McCreadv. Peter Cherry, John Giffen. John Buch, Philip Carns, Patrick Campbell, George Swan, Isaac McKendry, Robert McKee, John Anderson, James Watterson and Lawrence Irwin.

(It would be nice to know if these names are Abraham FULTON of the FULTON/GUTHRIE line in FULTONs of Westmoreland County, (Pub. 1940) and if John SLOAN above is the father or a relative of Nancy "Agnes" SLOAN who married Abraham FULTON's son Robert. James FULTON above is also likely to be Abraham FULTON's son.)

enlisted for during the war, he served six months as a substitute, in the meantime
helping to build Fort Meigs. In 1841, he came to Wabash County, Indiana, and
lived here until 1863 on the farm with his son Joseph. (History of Wabash
County, Indiana, 1884)

John's first wife died in Ohio and he married his 2nd wife (Elizabeth)
in 1848. (History of Wabash County)

His son Joseph was born in Shelby County, Ohio, Abt 1822.

Patrice (Fulton) Stark made some comments (Feb 2000) on http://www.familyhistory.com on the FULTON message board. While Patrice doesn't descend from this line of Abraham & Margaret (Guthry) FULTON, I've always found her research to be the accurate of anyone on the internet.

1) I have never seen a birth record for Abraham Fulton, just estimates based on the age of his oldest son, James Fulton, who married in 1772.

2) I have never seen a record in Ireland or Scotland that refers to a son Abraham Fulton "who went to America." To my knowledge, nobody has proved the father. I've seen "guesses" that the father was a William FULTON -- no proof offered.

3) Most Fultons who settled in Ulster (Northern Ireland) have ancestors in Ayrshire, Scotland.

4) Some descendants migrated to Licking County, OHIO (not Pennsylvania.) There are other FULTONs who came to Licking County from Ireland around 1850 that may be cousins from the old country.

5) There is probably a common Fulton ancestor. Artist & Inventor Robert Fulton was born 1765 before Abraham Fulton came to America.  If your name is FULTON, you are not a descendant of THE Robert Fulton. His only son, Robert Barlow Fulton, died unmarried. His only brother to live to maturity, Abraham Smith Fulton, died a few months after Robert. Though married, Abraham S. Fulton fathered no children.

KK Bibble bibble269@aol.com shared additional information on a Henry Fulton with descendants in Indiana. KKB's research suggests that this Fulton was a minister, father of David W. Fulton b 1830, in turn grandfather of a daughter born in Stateline, Indiana, ca 1850. [I'm assuming that Bible's ancestry traces to this daughter ?] Once again, my maps are inadequate. I am unable to locate "Stateline" Indiana -- for the moment I'll assume it is on the Indiana-Ohio border. (Is this right???)

This information sounds suspiciously familiar to the known descendants Abraham & Margaret (Guthrie) Fulton who came to Westmoreland Co., PA, ca 1780 from Articlave, Northern Ireland. Abraham's youngest son, Joseph Fulton, was the father of five known children: 1) Thomas Fulton who m Agnes "Nancy" King, 2) Sarah Fulton who m Robert Scott, 3) Henry Fulton who m Catherine McBeth SHIELDS, 4) Margaret Fulton who m Alexander King, and 5) James Fulton who m Mary Stewart. [Research of Raymond Riley of Kansas.]

David W. Fulton, b 25 Mar 1830 at West Liberty, Logan Co., OH, was the son of Henry Fulton and Catherine McBeth SHIELDS. David W. Fulton married Rebecca Jane French ca 1854 at Northwood, Logan Co., OH. They were the parents of at least 8 children, all born in Logan Co. OH:

1) David Fulton b 1857, 2) Henry Fulton b 1858, 3) Catherine Fulton, b 1860, 4) Sarah Fulton, b 1861, 5) Alice Fulton, b 1863, 6) Frances Fulton, b 1867, 7) James Renwick Fulton, b 1869, and 8) Edward Fulton, b 1871.My information suggests that this family lived at Bellefontaine, Logan Co., OH.

KKB: Please share more information on the Fulton daughter born at Stateline, Indiana. Was her name Catherine, Sarah, Alice, or Frances? If not, I'll look for another candidate.

PA Archives 5th Series, Volume 4, Revolutionary War "Depreciation Pay"
(continued)

From Westmoreland County, PA:

Private Henry Fulton
Private James Fulton
Private Robert Fulton

[It would be valuable to track down the source of the PA Archives information -- dates and names of others on these lists would be very  helpful.]

According to researcher Ernest Craighead, all three of these men are sons of Abraham & Margaret (Guthrie) Fulton. Craighead published his work in 1940. This may not be correct.

Recently, while tracking information on the family of a John Fulton who  died 1789 at Westmoreland Co., PA, I discovered that Craighead has   erroneously mixed another Fulton family into his research. While Abraham   Fulton did acquire land in South Huntington Twp, Westmoreland Co., there   is another Fulton family living at North Huntington Twp. Were the two   Fulton families related? I'm curious.

Private Henry Fulton is supposed to be the son of Abraham Fulton. He  acquired military bounty land in the area and died without issue. Curiously, Widow Agnes Fulton's son Henry, also "died without issue". And   I've found a Will for a Henry Fulton (1813) recorded at New Orleans   administered by a Henry Fulton of Washington Co. PA. How many Henry   Fulton's were there in western PA? How many fought in the Revolution?   Craighead claims Private Henry was a son of Abraham. Does anyone have   some supporting evidence?

Private James Fulton is supposed to be the son of Abraham Fulton. This is the James Fulton who came to America with his brother Robert Fulton   before 1770. James sailed back to Londonderry to fetch Abraham and the   rest of the family, James married a Cochran girl in Ireland the day   before they sailed, and the family arrived at Baltimore (after a  harrowing sea voyage) in 1772. According to Craighead, members of this   Fulton family were in Northumberland County, PA, prior to settling at  Westmoreland Co. in 1780. Is this the Private James Fulton of the Westmoreland Militia?

Or...could it be James Fulton, brother of John Fulton, who lived at North Huntington Twp, Westmoreland Co? In 1789, James Fulton and Agnes Fulton   witnessed the will of John Fulton. John Fulton bequeathed land to his son    Robert Fulton. And there's a William Fulton associated with this group,  who acquired the land of Philip Cramer/Criner as early as 1775 (Cramer    married Agnes Fulton). The exact tract of land granted to Robert Fulton, son of John Fulton, is shown in the Craighead book as being a tract owned    by Abraham's son, Robert Fulton. Craighead is in error. Understandably, he has mixed records of two distinct Robert Fultons in Westmoreland Co. I think we need to take a fine-tooth comb to this information.

Finally, Private Robert Fulton is supposed to be the son of Abraham   Fulton. In 1791, this Robert Fulton acquired title to land in South Huntington Twp, Westmoreland Co. which was transferred to Abraham Fulton   [Sr]. According to Craighead, this Robert Fulton survived the "winter of   the deep snow" in 1779 at Northumberland Co., PA. When did Private Robert Fulton enlist? Is this really the same man?

In conclusion -- I've never questioned Craighead's work, before. However,   new information on the "other" Fulton family living in Westmoreland Co.,  PA (i.e., NORTH Huntington Twp), suggests that more research is required.

There must be another list of the Westmoreland co. Militia -- where's Private Joseph Fulton? Patrice (Fulton) Stark
